Planning a trip to the stunning Koh Lipe from Langkawi during the low season? While direct ferry services are limited due to monsoon conditions, there are still ways to reach this tropical paradise. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the journey, offering step-by-step instructions and valuable tips.
The low season (June to October) presents unique challenges for travelers wishing to visit Koh Lipe from Langkawi. Due to rough seas and limited immigration services on the island, direct ferry routes are often unavailable. This means that your journey will require multiple transfers and take longer than usual.
During the low season, speedboats typically pick up and drop off passengers at Sunrise Beach. However, if the sea levels are not too high and the waves are calm, the boats will dock at Pattaya Beach as usual.
Koh Lipe does not have a permanent pier; instead, there is a floating platform that allows passengers to walk to the beach.

Traveling back to Langkawi from Koh Lipe involves multiple steps and can be time-consuming. It’s essential for travelers to plan in advance, whether you need to rush or have some time to spare.
Direct return via the same route in one day is not possible due to limited ferry schedules from Tammalang Pier (Satun) to Langkawi, which currently operates only once a day at 11:30 AM.
If you take the first speedboat from Koh Lipe at 9:30 AM, you'll reach Pakbara Pier by 11:00 AM. From there, the journey to Tammalang Pier takes about an hour, making it impossible to catch the 11:30 AM ferry. Here are some alternative options:
9:30 AM: Depart Koh Lipe for Pakbara Pier via the first speedboat.
11:00 AM: Arrive at Pakbara Pier.
11:30 AM: Travel from Pakbara Pier to Wang Prachan Border (Wang Kelian Border) (70 km, 1-1.30 hours).
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Complete immigration procedures before entering Malaysia.
12:00 PM (Thai Time): Travel from Wang Prachan Border to Kuala Perlis Jetty (48 km, 1 hour).
2:00 PM (Malaysia Time): Arrive at Kuala Perlis Jetty (Approximately)
Final Step: Head to Langkawi according to your pre-booked ferry schedule. There are many trips daily. Check and book your ferry (from the website recommended above) in advance as schedules may vary and ferries fill up quickly during peak periods. We recommend you to book 2-3 days in advance.
Note: The ferry from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi (Kuah Jetty) covers 36 km and takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. While this option involves multiple changes and nearly a full day of travel, it’s the best choice if you need to reach Langkawi within the same day.
After arriving at Pakbara Pier from Koh Lipe, regardless of the speedboat schedule, we will not be able to catch the ferry from Tammalang to Langkawi. We recommend you to relax and stay overnight in Pakbara or Satun.
11:30 AM (Thai Time): Leave from Tammalang Pier
2:00 PM (Malaysia Time): Arrives in Langkawi
The journey takes 1- 1.30hr.
Ideal for travelers with time to spare, this route is perfect if you don't plan to return to Langkawi and wish to travel to other destinations. From Hatyai International Airport, daily flights are available to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Phuket or Singapore. Alternatively, you can enter Malaysia through the Sadao Border in Songkhla or the Bukit Kayu Hitam border.
Note: All times mentioned are local times.
